Black Metal // Velour Paper, Roto-Cast Resin and Plaster

This work is based on a reinterpretation of accessories worn in the Black Metal scene. Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. The brutal image of this subculture is partly created through the use of clothing and accessories. Black metal artists and their fans often appear dressed in black with combat boots, bullet belts, fake blood, spiked neck and wristbands, leather costumes and corpse paint (makeup that makes the wearer appear inhuman, corpse-like). Since there are no real enemies to fight, these armor inspired accessories can therefore be seen as props or narrative objects that proclaim outer strength.

The “Black Metal” necklace collection creates an illusion of violence and evil through the combination of the formal references to armor with fakery materials used in the prop making industry.
