I just am – but who am I? An Identity conflict // Aluminium and Leather

The aim of this work and objects is to foreground an identity conflict; The feeling of living a life in-between male and female, two opposites sides. It also comments on the intricate task of defining your private sense and subjective experience of gender identity or gender position.

Gender is not only an innate quality of individuals, there is much more going on. A role can be played, by “doing gender”. This term coined by Candace West and Don Zimmerman describes the idea that gender is a psychologically ingrained social construct that actively surfaces in everyday human interaction and that an individual’s performance of gender is intended to construct gendered behavior as naturally occurring.

In this project, the idea of “doing gender” is explored through the design of objects that support and force the body into various postures that reinforce gendered roles. The ultimate goal of this project is to find a balance between the gender binary and to find a new way of expressing identity.
