OTAKU | TAL ENGEL | 2015

Otaku ist eine Badewanne, die vom traditionellen asiatischen Bootsbau inspiriert ist. Die Wanne aus gewobenem und in Form gepresstem Holzfurnier wird in einem feinen Stahlrahmen gehalten. Inspiriert ist das Design von der Analogie zwischen dem Gefühl von Baden und Segeln, wobei das Innen dem Aussen weicht und umgekehrt, sodass ein neuer Horizont in der Welt der Hygiene eröffnet wird. Basierend auf diesem Konzept zeichnet ‚Otaku“ mithilfe der Formsprache von Handwerk und Industrie ein feines Portrait der Beziehung zwischen unserem Körper und dem Wasser.

Otaku is a bathtub which was inspired by traditional asian boat building techniques. It is made of a pressed woven veneer sheet and a steel frame. This project emphasizes on a unique relation between sailing and bathing – as states of mind, and between the boat and the bathtub as functional entities. This concept formulates an almost paradoxical analogy, from-which the „inside-out“ theory had emerged.
The concept of washing in a bathtub is completely the opposite from the concept of floating in a boat – the inside becomes the outside. Hence, the ‚outside“ of the boat became the „inside“ of the bath. Based on this notion, a different perspective on our hygienic environment had emerged. Using the language of craft and industry, ‚Otaku‘s“ design attempts to draw a portrait of a special relationship between our body and water.
