DEFACED CLUTCH by Ido Levi

The project explores an object that requires defacement to become usable. The clutch bag begins as a flat surface hardened by a coating. Its first use is an act of breaking — a deliberate gesture that creates transformation: from rigid material, through emerging cracks, to an opened volume. The user leaves unique marks on the object, and the break becomes a private aesthetic reflecting the moment of activation.

The idea was inspired by everyday objects that users tend to alter, wear down, peel, or scratch over time — scribbled-on desks, half-peeled stickers, marks on walls. These actions are bodily gestures that allow intimacy or control over everyday things. The product invites reflection on the threshold between use and destruction: What is damage? When is destruction intimate? When is it domination? And when is it simply part of our natural relationship with material and objects?

Materially, the clutch bag is made from fabric coated in two distinct layers: a flexible inner layer and a harder outer shell, like a crust. This combination allows the object to feel closed and rigid at first glance, yet to break in a controlled way and reveal its volume and usability. The layered structure gradually exposes a relationship between material, form, and user, offering a tactile experience where defacement becomes a personal point of entry.
