In today’s reality plastic has become as abundant in our oceans as marine life. It’s now so pervasive that we consume it daily, often unknowingly, as if it were one of the ocean’s many delicacies. This is a result of the mass consumer culture we live in, and the twisted narratives we’re fed: that plastic is being recycled, that it’s being handled sustainably. But the truth is far more complex. Sustainable products alone won’t solve a deeply flawed global system.
Fruits of the Sea, is a jewellery collection made from silver and ocean plastics that seeks to expose this imbalance. Each piece explores reframing plastic, not as waste, but as material worth holding, wearing, and rethinking.
People treat plastic the way they perceive it, if we change that perception, we might begin to change our behaviour.
In der heutigen Realität ist Plastik in unseren Meere ebenso reichlich vorhanden wie Meeresleben. Es ist mittlerweile so allgegenwärtig, dass wir es täglich konsumieren, oft ohne es zu wissen, als wäre es eine der vielen Köstlichkeiten des Ozeans. Dies ist das Ergebnis der Massenkonsum Kultur, in der wir leben, und der verdrehten Narrative, die uns vorgesetzt werden: dass Plastik recycelt wird, dass es nachhaltig gehandhabt wird. Aber die Wahrheit ist weitaus komplexer. Nachhaltige Produkte allein werden ein zutiefst fehlerhaftes globales System nicht lösen.
Fruits of the Sea ist eine Schmuckkollektion aus Silber und Meeresplastik, die dieses Ungleichgewicht aufzeigen will. Jedes Stück untersucht die Neudefinition von Plastik, nicht als Abfall, sondern als Material, das es wert ist, aufbewahrt, getragen und neu gedacht zu werden.
Menschen behandeln Plastik so, wie sie es wahrnehmen. Wenn wir diese Wahrnehmung ändern, könnten wir beginnen, unser Verhalten zu ändern.
