Material generously provided by Formcard

During this short-term project you will experiment with a thermoplast material by melting it in hot water and shaping it.

The main goal is getting your hands dirty in order to explore potential applications for this material. Go fast, go crazy, go many!

Formcard is a product by designer Peter Marigold who will run a lecture for us as a kick-off.

The brief

  • Create a product made from Formcard in the sense of an object that makes your everyday life better. This can be an add-on, a tool, a system, you name it…
  • Think of yourself as the client.

The process

  • Explore ways to apply the material through molding, mending, attaching, merging, fixing, modifying, adapting, hacking, repurposing, repairing…
  • Observe the world around you. What kind of on-the-go solutions for an everyday problem could you come up with? Generate ideas, generate more, generate iterations, experiment!
  • Use Formcard as your material, your tools for production are completely free.
  • Design and produce a physical prototype (or a series) of your concept.
  • By the end of the short project, present your end result, your process and the potential you see for your product.

The background
Ask yourself questions such as:

  • How could this material make your everyday life better?
  • What is your solution for?
  • How will your solution be made? (craft / serial product)
  • Why is it particularly beneficial to use this material
  • What is the life cycle of the object?

Think in the bigger picture. Think: simple but smart.
