Kompaktkurs / My life, my home, nobody’s business?

Social/Socio-political Design, Narrative Design

Languages: German and/or English

Societal and political processes are being digitized increasingly. Especially in the CITY as an experimental, intriguing conglomeration, the public and the private are highly interwoven with technological developments. Some say, our cities are becoming more hybrid, others think they are becoming smarter. Regardless of utopian or dystopian interpretations, the technologically induced transformation of our cities seems as obvious as inevitable. What kind of relations and communication behaviours  do evolve though? What role do we play in this processes – as designers?

In this class we will examine the relationship of the Cybercity (Graham 2004) and a politically minded Design. We will closely examine the concrete neighborhood „Mehringplatz“ in Berlin Kreuzberg, in order to develop narratives of these place for the near future. We will focus on what we today call the Digital Divide and apply perspectives on power, access and privilege. These narratives will finally serve us as the foundation for the development of concepts, prototypes and visions that question the roles of Design and the urban future.
