This year’s MA design project will be in collaboration with ERCO Leuchten.
ERCO is a leading international specialist in efficient architectural lighting. The family-owned business in Lüdenscheid (Germany) was founded in 1934. ERCO pioneered architectural lighting across Europe in the 1960s and in 2015, the company became the first established luminaire manufacturer with a portfolio based entirely on LED technology. ERCO Greenology®, the corporate strategy for sustainable lighting, combines ecological responsibility with technological expertise.
ERCO is not only a lighting manufacturer with a distinct heritage in design (with the likes of Otl Aicher and Franco Clivio involved), but also one of the few German companies that still research, design, develop and produce under the same roof.
Together we will visit their headquarters, learn about the science of light and illumination, see their manufacturing facilities and sit down with their designers and developers.
Being deeply rooted in complex technical architectural lighting, where light itself and spatial project requirements play a key role, we want to look at ERCO’s competence and envision product solutions which have the end user in mind.
How would an ERCO product look and feel like which is intended for use in domestic or hospitality settings? How can we enable object qualities to become the tangible layer to light in an otherwise increasingly abstract reality?
How can we think premium lighting becoming more sustainable, and what do we envision to be relevant topics to users in the future as such?
Can poetry and haptic experience play a role in the context of illuminating our spaces?
In this project we aim to explore opportunities for new concepts and innovation resulting in real life product proposals.
We plan to organise a presentation of the best results in the ERCO showroom Berlin with an exhibition in 2026.
