The project aims to draw attention to an often-overlooked object by rethinking its conventional typology. A smoke detector — typically designed to fade into the background — becomes UFO, an unidentified flying object on your ceiling that is meant to catch your eye.
Beyond its appearance, the project promotes the idea of repairability. In Germany, smoke detectors must be replaced every ten years, regardless of their physical condition. This regulation — while rooted in safety — leads to the disposal of millions of fully intact housings, simply because the internal electronics reach the end of their certified lifespan.
UFO proposes a more sustainable alternative by separating the outer shell from the functional core. Rather than replacing the entire unit, only the electronic components are designed to be exchanged.
Ziel des Projekts ist es, einem oft übersehenen Objekt Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, indem dessen konventionelle Typologie neu gedacht wird. Ein Rauchmelder – üblicherweise so gestaltet, dass er in den Hintergrund tritt – wird zu UFO, einem unbekannten Flugobjekt an der Decke, das bewusst ins Auge fallen soll.
Über seine äußere Erscheinung hinaus verfolgt das Projekt die Idee der Reparierbarkeit. In Deutschland müssen Rauchmelder alle zehn Jahre ausgetauscht werden – unabhängig von ihrem physischen Zustand. Diese Vorschrift, so sinnvoll sie im Hinblick auf die Sicherheit auch ist, führt dazu, dass jedes Jahr Millionen vollständig intakter Gehäuse entsorgt werden, nur weil die interne Elektronik das Ende ihrer zertifizierten Lebensdauer erreicht hat.
UFO schlägt eine nachhaltigere Alternative vor: die Trennung von äußerem Gehäuse und funktionalem Kern. Anstatt die gesamte Einheit zu ersetzen, sollen nur die elektronischen Komponenten ausgetauscht werden.
