POWER HOUSE
We live in a networked society and for products we speak about the internet of things.
With all that the digitization in and around our houses grows. This is all very exciting, but it also means that more and more products with plugs and power are needed where we try to meet the ‚Paris agreements‘ and really have to slow down on our use of energy in the future!

The Power House project in four stages:
1 > An integrated short time project as warming up
2 >
A short workshop on future technologies with Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel
3 > The final Power House projects where previous steps are taken further, or a new project started
4 > Sense & Sustainability Symposium in Designtransfer

4/6. Semester
Unlimited amount of students
Projectweek 23-27 April

Supervision:
Prof. Ineke Hans

participants:
Bastian Thürich, Bubby Vernon, Dong Liu, Louis Bindernagel, Nadia Narges Rezaei, Sarah Sekles, Sophie Stanitzek, Stefanie Mühlbacher, Tillmann Vanhöf

1 SHORT TIME PROJECT:
How can we slow down on our use of energy with both old and new materials, technologies,  methods and strategies and empower our homes and ways of living for the future?
This short time project is integrated in the Power House project as an experimental warming up/brainstorm week.

In Power House -> Short we will touch briefly on the various themes of the overall project and present some first thoughts.
new technology: such as the internet of things, use of programming / arduino
learning from the past: handpower, no power, common sense
biological power: sun, wind, shit, biogas
power of materials: isolating, heating up, conducting
powerfull themes: waste, food, water, energy, wellbeing
strategies of thing: systems, implementing, by who-for who?

The short time project  includes a visit to Deutsches Technikmuseum, but the Power House projects are open for high- and low-tech thoughts. At the end of the short term project some first results will be presented.

2 FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES:
A workshop with Marjan van Aubel.
In 2050 75% of the population will live in cities. How will your future world look like? How are we going to feed and supply energy to 10 billion people in a sustainable and ecological way?
In a 3 days we look into future technologies. How will we create energy in the future? How will solar, wind or other ways of harvesting energy shape our future? How will they look like? We will take the three elements into account: design, technology, sustainability.

3 POWER HOUSE FINALS
Young product designers today have to do more than just creating nice new objects. They also have to develop critical skills and visions on how to develop and produce goods in the future.
In this last phase of the project earlier learnings will come together: we will work on the development of new products, projects, systems and strategies; possible and speculative outcomes that offer sensible and sustainable solutions for our houses. This can be  high-tech or low-tech.

• The aim is to focus on new products for future living but also on the footprints that those projects have in the world when they get out there.
• We will take in research methods, experiment with old and new materials, methods and technology, and develop plans and strategies to implement outcomes in current systems.
• The project will be finished with an exhibition in Design Transfer and a symposium with some international guests.
