UdK:shop

The UdK:shop is managed by the marketing team of the UdK Berlin.

The UdK:shop is an intersection between the public and the UdK Berlin. The UdK:shop team is  always on the lookout for new creative productions by UdK Berlin students and opportunities for creative collaboration. By selling in the online shop, in the retail shop at Einsteinufer 43, as well as presenting via Instagram, they offer students a platform for marketing and testing their artistic products on the market.

The shop offers a wide range of products: from high-quality catalogs and artwork to the award-winning coffee-to-go cups and limited small editions of students‘ works.
In addition to student work, the marketing team also always includes new products from UdK alumni in their range. And they are always  looking for individually tailored products for key events such as the ‚Rundgang‘ or the First semester ‚begrüssung‘.

A&W Magazine / AW newcomer shop – Karen Hartwig, Uta Abendroth

Architektur & Wohnen is one of the leading interior magazines on design in Germany, both in print and online.
AW magazin has been presenting new creative minds – the newcomers to the scene – for years and it is particularly important to them to support these designers. But the potential for up-and-coming talent is huge and the road to recognition is long. In addition to luck and perseverance, success also requires good storytelling, media attention and access to distribution channels.

With the AW Newcomer Shop, AW magazine has gone one step further. They created a platform for newcomers to sell their first own designs. AW Newcomer Shop does not only offer exceptional products, but AW magazine also tells the stories behind them: How do the talents work? What motivates them? What makes them special?

During the summer semester of 2025 we work together with AW Magazine editors Karen Hartwig (editor in chief) and Uta Abendroth (journalist/editor). In AW Magazin they will tell the stories of the designers and the makers and the small series that will come to life.

Karen Hartwig

Uta Abendroth:
Geboren in Osnabrück, zunächst Modedesignstudium in Florenz, dann Englische Literatur, Kunstgeschichte und Klassische Archäologie in Hamburg und London. Berufliche Stationen als Redakteurin: Architektur & Wohnen und Schöner Wohnen. Autorin u.a. für Atrium, Brigitte, dpa, Spiegel online,  Steilpark, Welt am Sonntag und Der Feinschmecker….

DIM – Die Imaginäre Manufaktur

Today, we have an abundance of products, but knowledge about their manufacture is rather scarce. Where are they made? Who works on them and under what conditions? What materials are used? Sometimes certificates give us answers to these questions, but in most cases the history of the product remains in the dark.

DIM – The Imaginary Manufactory takes a different approach to manufacturing. In contrast to mass-produced items, DIM products are made by disabled and non-disabled people together using traditional craftsmanship. This is done locally, in Berlin and Brandenburg, as part of the workshops of USE GmbH (Union Sozialer Einrichtungen gemeinnützige GmbH).
The DIM workshops in Berlin-Kreuzberg contain workshops for: boxmaking, ceramics, textile, woodwork, brushmaking and basketweaving.

There are interesting stories to tell about DIM in Kreuzberg. It is housed in an old school and for decades it housed the Städtische Blinden-Anstalt (blind-workers). In 1998 the name DIM came about through a project initiated by Berlin designers Vogt & Weizenegger with the Binden-Anstalt. Together with the brushmakers and basket weavers products came about by designers such as: Volker Albus, Shin and Tomoko Azumi, Matali Crasset, Marti Guixé, Isabel Hamm, Konstantin Grcic, Alfredo Häberli, Arik Levy, Michael Marriott, Tim Parsons, Judith Seng, Winfried Scheuer, Mats Theselius, Oliver Vogt, Hermann Weizenegger.

For this summersemester projekt we work together with the DIM workshops in Berlin-Kreuzberg and there will be options to produce limited series for AW newcomer-shop in the DIM workshops.

27 MARCH: LOVED ONES pops up at Museum der Dinge

Results from the Wintersemester project ‚Loved Ones‘ will be on show for a day in the Museum der Dinge.
‚Loves Ones- objects to keep‘ took place under supervision of Guestprofessor Mathias Hahn and Jonna Hille.
It will be open for the public on 27th March 12:00 – 21:00 with an evening event  starting at 18:00h. The students will give short presentations.

Backgrounds on Loved Ones….
Longevity is a key issue when it comes to understanding design as a tool for sustainability. In a world of constant consumption, the relationship between people and objects is often short-lived. Products are quickly replaced and many things lose their purpose before they have reached their full lifespan.
– How can design extend the useful life of a product? What role does the emotional appreciation of objects play? How can we delay or avoid the consumption of new goods? Where can design solutions have a positive impact on greater sustainability?
– How can repairability, modification and maintenance be integrated into the design process to make products more durable?

In this winter semester, students of the course Design & Development of UdK Berlin examined various strategies that counteract the premature ageing of objects. These include aspects such as material durability, systemic approaches as well as emotional attachment and narrative elements.
The works on display identify alternatives to existing product solutions and showcase innovative concepts with long-term relevance and use in mind

18-20 dec: exhibition: Ungovernable Ingredients

Visual & Gestaltung: Katja Koeberlin & Gosia Warrink / Typeface: Tresor by Christoph Koeberlin

An exhibition of artists* and scientists* from the Faculty of Design at the UdK Berlin, presenting the work they have been researching on over the last years

Ungovernable Ingredients
The exhibition sheds light on the expanded set of ingredients that have become critical to contemporary artistic practice. These include micro-organisms, feelings, conflict and animals, alongside long-familiar media such as light, video, and clay. Living beings, new languages, communities, or strange materials are invited into artistic and research processes for their ungovernable qualities and become co-creators, a source of political resistance, or the crucial pinch of salt.

With contributions by Maciej Chmara, Manja Ebert, Işıl Eğrikavuk, Annika Haas, Anita Jóri, Anna Kokalanova, Lilli Kuschel, Gosia Warrink.

Find Your Footprint x ZEITRAUM in Designpost Köln | 19 Oct-30 Jan

The summer semester project ‘Find Your Footprint’ and the collaboration with the German furniture company ZEITRAUM Furniture will lead to an exhibition at the Designpost Cologne in autumn.

In June, all students involved in the project visited ZEITRAUM and some of its suppliers in Bavaria. Among others, they were given access to ZEITRAUM’s material library and they all designed furniture with a minimal ecological footprint.

ZEITRAUM was subsequently so enthusiastic about the projects that they decided to present some of them at Designpost Cologne, including during the well-attended Orgatec furniture fair.

The following projects were selected:

  • HauRuck – Jonas Spieker
  • Oculto – Laurin Höhne
  • Snäpp – Anton Oberländer
  • Tani – Limeng Liu

Perforating the City I Tim Schütze I MA 2024

PERFORATING THE CITY | Masterarbeit 2024

Perforating the City
Permeable cycle paths for climate-resilient cities

Urban transportation is shifting from fossil fuels to more sustainable forms of mobility. In the climate-resilient and safe city, the mobility infrastructure is changing by redistributing space and redesigning cycling networks. With regard to future adaptation measures to the climate crisis, the green mobility transition must take a planetary perspective and avoid the sealing of further areas.

Perforating the City therefore calls for water-sensitive design of urban cycle paths. In response to increasing weather extremes, the systematic approach designs permeable traffic areas that infiltrate, distribute, store and evaporate rainwater. The surface structure is interpreted as an architected material consisting of a flat surface structure with parametric perforations and a porous volume structure with adaptive water distribution. Autonomous 3D printing robots are used to continuously print the cycle path from mineral materials on site. The project responds to the increasing complexity of the ecosystems around us and understands urban space design as an integrative process in which additive manufacturing enables a symbiotic integration of urban flora, underground drainage, roadway boundaries, public furniture and the visual appearance as a whole.

Perforating the City

Perforating the City fordert daher eine wassersensible Gestaltung städtischer Radwege.

Tobias, Esmee and Anna on show in TRANSFORM! Vitra designmuseum

Three recent Productdesign graduates are on show in the current exhibition Transform! at Vitra designmuseum.

Energy is the main driving force of our society; energy is political, energy is invisible, energy is omnipresent. All of the buildings, infrastructure and products related to the generation, distribution and utilization of energy are created by human beings. Consequently, design plays a key role in the current transition to renewable energy. The exhibition »Transform! Designing the Future of Energy« shines a light on the transformation of the energy sector from the perspective of design: from everyday products that use renewable energy to the design of solar houses and wind power stations; from smart mobility systems to futuristic visions of self-sufficient cities. What are the criteria for designing an energy-efficient product? How can design contribute to an increase in the use of renewable energy sources? How can industry, government policies and every one of us help to achieve the transition to a sustainable future?

The exhibition features Tobias Trübenbacher’s award-winning graduation project from 2021: Papilio, a wind-powered street lamp that also addresses the theme of light pollution.
On show is also PLUS MINUS 25°C, a semester project by Esmee Willemsen and Anna Koppmann in the Semesterprojekt  Past Present, conservation for innovation

Fashionable Therapeutics: SUNCARE’s 3D-Printed Wearable Redefining Pain Management and Sustainability

SUNCARE stands for healthcare innovation, offering a transformative solution for arthritis and rheumatic patients. This 3D-printed wearable, exemplified by a stylish neck piece resembling a fashionable collar, seamlessly combines aesthetics with function to provide targeted heat therapy. What sets SUNCARE apart is its commitment to sustainability and personalized care.

In addition to the discreet heating pad integrated into the design, SUNCARE incorporates an ingenious solar cell, cleverly disguised as an elegant brooch. This solar cell serves a dual purpose, enhancing the functionality of the wearable while embracing eco-friendly, sustainable energy practices. The brooch not only adds a touch of sophistication to the overall design but also acts as a power source, capturing sunlight to generate energy for heating the pad.

The solar cell technology employed by SUNCARE aligns with a vision of a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future. By harnessing the power of the sun, the wearable minimizes its ecological footprint, offering users an eco-friendly alternative to traditional therapeutic devices. This innovative feature not only benefits the users but also contributes to a global dialogue on integrating sustainable practices into healthcare solutions.

The process of customization for SUNCARE remains centered on the user’s unique anatomy. Through advanced 3D scanning technology, the wearable is tailored to fit the individual’s neck contours, ensuring both comfort and efficacy. The solar cell brooch adds an extra layer of personalization, allowing users to express their style preferences while contributing to the wearable’s functionality.

As users go about their day, the solar cell silently captures sunlight, converting it into energy to power the heating pad discreetly woven into the neck piece. This dynamic interaction between fashion, sustainability, and health redefines the expectations of therapeutic wearables. SUNCARE transcends the traditional boundaries of medical devices, introducing a holistic approach that addresses physical, emotional, and environmental well-being.

Looking ahead, the versatility of SUNCARE extends beyond the neck piece. With the integration of solar cell technology, the possibilities for adapting the wearable for other parts of the body become even more promising. Users can anticipate a range of personalized, 3D-printed wearables that not only provide targeted relief but also contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

Embark on a journey into the future of pain management and wellness at our expo, where SUNCARE takes center stage. Experience firsthand the harmonious convergence of fashion, function, and sustainability. Join us in redefining healthcare norms, embracing personalized, eco-friendly solutions that empower individuals with chronic conditions and inspire a new era of stylish, conscious living.

about the importance of the superfluous | manuela huebl – MA modul 1

A fitted ear adornment (for hearing aids)

In Germany, 3.7 million people wear a hearing aid. Many face challenges, from social stigma to self-consciousness. An adornment for hearing aid changes the narrative and enhances the wearer’s self-expression and control over their appearance. Utilizing 3D scans ensures true customization. The adornment is 3D printed with wax resin and casted in sterling silver using the lost wax casting method.

Project:

A fitted ear adornment (for hearing aids)

In Germany, 5.4 million people are hearing impaired. 3.7 of them wear a hearing aid. A number that is expected to rise, especially among younger demographics. Anja, one of those 3.7 million people, says: „I’ve been using a hearing aid since I was a child. Despite my efforts of hiding it, I faced teasing during my teenage years. Now, I’ve come to terms with it, but I’m still very conscious about it.“ Anjas’s experience echoes the challenges many face.

A way to turn the narrative is through jewelry for hearing aids. It reveals – rather than conceals, while integrating the hearing aid into the design of the adornment. This approach redefines the hearing aid from a medical device to an accessories, enhancing the wearer’s self-expression and control over their appearance. This concept is akin to that of prescription glasses – aids for better vision without any associated stigma.

By utilizing 3D scanning technology for this mass-customization, the jewelry is precisely tailored to fit the shape of the ear (wearing the hearing aid). 3D scans, still underexploited in the jewelry market, hold significant potential. After a fit check using draft resin, the final adornment is printed with castable wax resin and is then casted in sterling silver using the traditional lost wax casting method.

The jewelry itself fuses bionic structures with the natural contours of the ear’s topology. The objective was to digitalize traditional goldsmithing techniques through parametric 3D modeling. Features like voronoi and lattice structures, emphasize the jewelry’s roots in 3D printing.

Form Emergency | Louis Bindernagel – MA modul 1

In crisis situations, particularly in developing countries, logistical challenges hinder the timely delivery of essential emergency aid. This is where 3D printing becomes a critical solution, enabling the on-site production of critical items and spare parts. The Formlabs Form 3 stands out in these scenarios with its intuitive interface and versatile resin capabilities, ensuring reliable production under demanding conditions. This is complemented by an emergency kit, which includes a durable aluminium box that serves as both a robust housing for the printer and a functional working platform, adaptable to unstable power sources. This setup, integrated with a Red Cross-inspired platform for accessible 3D files, enhances the Form 3’s role in improving the efficiency and reliability of emergency response operations.

Project:

Usually when a disaster occurs, it hits people in developing nations the hardest. The transportation of necessary emergency aid to places that no longer have access to general supplies is complicated. Often there is a partial or complete lack of a functioning logistics infrastructure. Emergency and relief operations become even more challenging, especially since the goods are extremely time-critical. Help can even come to a halt when appliances break down and the necessary spare parts take days or even weeks to be delivered. A solution is needed to produce goods.
In those critical moments, 3D printing can offer an answer for creating products and spare parts on the ground. It can create a lifeline, producing medical supplies and equipment on demand. However, 3D printing can be a challenge in these high-pressure situations.

That’s where the Formlabs Form 3 can make a difference. With its user-friendly interface and various quality resins, the Form 3 can produce a broad range of parts and products. Its ease of use and consistent output make it a reliable choice in demanding scenarios. But there are also practical issues, such as access to the right 3D files or the appropriate working environment for the printer.

This is where the new emergency package comes in play, developed by working closely with various stakeholders to simplify on-site printing. A robust aluminium box, standard in international logistics, doubles as a dust and shock-proof housing and a work platform for post-processing, with a construction that facilitates the necessary levelling for the printer’s operation. The box accommodates both the printer and the wash & cure process, as well as all the necessary materials. Industrial pull-out drawers allow easy accessibility. Often located on unstable power grids, unreliable for 3D printing, a generous power bank not only provides the necessary security, but also allows solar panels to be connected.

A platform based on the Red Cross Standard Product Catalogue, which lists all the products needed for crisis relief, has been developed to provide local users with access to 3D files and much more. Through the NGOs‘ headquarters, engineers and designers work on expanding, optimising and modifying these 3D files in direct exchange with the workers on site.

The Form 3 helps to avoid supply bottlenecks in international emergency aid and by that creates a more resilient system. Through a network of various actors, an increasingly solid database is being created that can be downloaded to be there in an emergency.

Camouflage Jewelry | Gregor Jahner – MA modul 1

Camouflage Jewelry is inspired by the idea of tricking facial recognition software. The liquid form is generatively designed to protect the wearer’s identity without completely covering the face. The design is created using an individual face scan on an app, where the data generated for this application is then irrevocably deleted. These molds are 3D printed in castable wax resin using an SLA printer to cast the objects in silver.

7 nov: Prof Ineke Hans speaks at ‚Zukunftort Tempelhof‘ on Climate & Creative industries

In the panel discussion „Thinking about the future: climate and creative industries“, Prof Ineke Hans talks together with experts from business, research and culture about innovations for a sustainable future.
How does the future of our climate look like? How will our living spaces change over the next 100 years? And how can we prepare for this in the best way?

On 7 November 2023, the Berlin Future Places at Tempelhof Airport will showcase important contributions from research and practice on how to deal with climate change. In short keynote speeches, you will learn how we will grow our fruit and vegetables in fog instead of soil in the future, generate wind energy by flying kites and why our buildings should be made of mushrooms rather than concrete.

This year’s Climate Day is being hosted by Zukunftsort Flughafen Tempelhof. The former airport is developing into an experimental location and urban neighbourhood for art, culture and the creative industries. But can art and culture be sustainable and economically viable at the same time? In the panel discussion „Thinking about the future: climate and creative industries“, stakeholders from business, research and politics in Berlin’s creative industries will have their say.

On March 30th. the nominees of the Make it Circular Challenge were announced by What Design Can Do and its partner the IKEA Foundation.
With their project REST IN GROUNDS Lale Knapp and Nele Oetjens are one of the 50 nominees out of 650 projects entered from 20 different countries!

During the Challenge open call, creatives were asked to submit ideas in at least one of five categories reflecting the key aspects or ‘value chains’ in a circular society. The Circular Design Challenge features exciting innovations that prevent waste by rethinking our way of life: from what we eat and wear, to how we build, package and buy.

Lale & Nele developed their REST IN GROUNDS project in the Circular Impact course (WiSe 2022/23 – Design & Social Context).
It concerns the design and manufacture of a biodegradable urn made from coffee grounds, which has the ability of neutralising the ashes and also has a positive impact

On 3 May, the 13 most promising projects will be crowned this year’s winners.
The winners will take home an award package designed to strengthen their projects and set them up for long-term success. And they will gain access to a six-month-long development programme which has been co-created by experts from the global Impact Hub network. Winning teams will also receive €10.000 each to invest in their project, as well as press and publicity through WDCD’s channels and those of their partners.

PRESSE

Mettmann, 10. Februar 2023

PRESS

Mettmann, February 10, 2023
Mono launches young talent development project with German Design Graduates.
With the “Mono Residency”, the owner-managed family business from Mettmann, as the official ambassador of the German Design Graduates, is launching a funding project to mark the anniversary of the Mono teapot.

Mono residency
As an ambassador for the German Design Graduates – an initiative affiliated with the German Design Council in the service of promoting young talent – Mono initiates the “Mono Residency”, which is aimed directly at young designers. For more than 125 years, the family business has been manufacturing design products for the laid table in manual work at the production site in Mettmann. In 2023, Mono invites a selection of 10 from the last four graduate classes (2018-2022) to participate in the “Mono Residency” program.

40 years mono teapot
In 1983, the company, together with the designer Tassilo von Grolman, launched the first Mono teapot. It was to become a design icon in the decades that followed. The Mono Classic teapot was followed by the Mono Filio and Mono Ellipse models, which can also be found in many living rooms of tea and design lovers around the world. This 40th anniversary is both the occasion and the theme of the first edition of the “Mono Residency”.

New Perspectives
Mono invites the residency participants to play, intervene, deconstruct and recontextualize. By examining the materials of the Mono teapots and their iconic appearance, the designers develop new perspectives on the classic. The result of the project is ten creative individual pieces – ten art and design objects which take up the materiality and typology of the Mono teapot and which are characterized by their originality
as well as strong aesthetics stand for themselves.

The ten young designers
• Studio Bnag (Oliver Selim-Boualam & Lukas Marstaller) – State University of Design Karlsruhe `20/`21
• Matthias Gschwendtner – Berlin University of the Arts `21/`22
• Justus Hilfenhaus – Bauhaus University Weimar `20/`21

• Silvio Rebholz – State. Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart `18/`19
• Julian Ribler – Berlin University of the Arts `18/`19

Werner Aisslinger (1964) graduated from UdK in 1991. Since then he dived into themes that are at the forefront of the design discourse; he worked with the latest technologies (Soft Cell, Juli Chair), new interior typologies (a.o. 25 Hours hotel/Bikini Berlin) and explored sustainable alternatives for furniture (Chair Farm, Hemp Chair). Very early in his career he looked at tiny living (Loft Cube) and with the exhibition House of Wonders he looked at potential future ways of living. Since 2012 he has been a judge in the German Bundespreis Ecodesign. Werner will present some case studies, talk about the role circularity plays in his praxis, and share some experiences being a judge in the Bundespreis Ecodesign.

Julian Lechner is a Berlin based designer who studied in Bolzano. He aims to give renewable resources – that would have ended up in the trash – a second life by transforming them into everyday objects and infusing them with a new purpose. He set up the company Kaffeeform with  a unique formula at core to upcycle old coffee into new design products. The first coffee cup prototype was made in 2009, but was developed further and improved over and over again. Julian will take us through this process and explain about the design decisions he had to make along the way, to make the concept work in the market.

German Design Council announced 5 finalists Newcomer Award 2023 (4x UdK!)

German Design Award 2023: Five newcomer finalists selected. Four of them are graduates from UdK Design!
Product Design: Anna Koppmann, Tim Schütze and Tobias Trübenbacher, Fashion: Paula Keilholz.

Frankfurt, October 31, 2022
The jury of the German Design Award 2023 has selected the finalists for the »Newcomer« award.

The five up-and-coming designers from German design schools, Katharina Düing, Paula Keilholz, Anna Koppmann, Tim Schütze and Tobias Trübenbacher, impressed with their excellent portfolios. With their work, they show in particular a keen eye on social and ecological challenges – contemporary, relevant and with intelligent solutions. The award thus proves the importance of young design for the competitiveness and future viability of medium-sized companies and the German economy.

Design can provide answers to pressing questions of our time – this year, social issues and a strong ecological awareness are reflected in the portfolios of the finalists. What they all have in common is the focus on developing new solutions for ecological, social and global challenges and improving social interaction. What is exciting about the portfolios of the five selected young designers from different disciplines such as product, industrial, communication and fashion design is the diversity of perspectives and their respective implementation in practice.

The five finalists convinced the jury with their contemporary and progressive designs, which focus on topics such as gender justice, the energy and climate crisis or civil courage. The nominees were presented on October 12, 2022 in Berlin in the Soho House on the occasion of the Design Gala of the German Design Council. You get the chance to win the German Design Award, which is worth 15,000 euros.

Produktdesign: Anna Koppmann, Tim Schütze und Tobias Trübenbacher, Mode: Paula Keilholz.

Frankfurt, 31. Oktober 2022

LOUIS BINDERNAGEL WINS GDG Circular Design Award 2022

At the recent German Design Graduates award ceremony at Schloss Pillnitz Louis Bindernagel won one of the four main awards with his graduation project „Whole Earth Project“.
He was handed over his award by the jury and books by the renown design critic Alice Rawsthorn in person.

Jury Statement:
The Circular Design Award 2022 goes to the „Whole Earth Project“ by Louis Bruno Bindernagel, a graduate of the Berlin University of the Arts. The work bears witness to the designer’s intensive examination of economic, ecological and social challenges at the same time. The project deals with the analysis, consolidation and creation of networks dedicated to the idea „Think Global, Make Local“ and follows the approach of a decentralized production system with ideas shared worldwide.
The jury was particularly impressed by the integration of several principles such as efficiency, sufficiency, resilience and consistency in one design, which are designed to be circular in as many phases of a life cycle as possible.

EXCURSION TO DRESDEN / PILLNITZ | SoSe 2022

On 17 May – as part of the FIGURINES! project and Master colloquin we visited Zwinger Porzellansammlung in Dresden and Design Campus /Kunstgewerbemusem at Schloss Pillnitz.
The Zwinger is home to the amazing Porcelain collection with early European porcelain that saw the limelight since August the Strong ‚invented‘ how to make porcelain in Europe. The collection houses stunning and rare pieces, see

At Schloss Pillnitz we gained insight into the summer school program of the Design Campus and the collection of the Kunstgewerbemuseum and the transition of the museum over the years and its possible future.

FIGURINES!

For centuries ceramic figurines have been on the tables of kings and queens as ‘conversation pieces’ for topics that people understood and could read at the time.

Manufacturers were often connected to the courts and developed their own themes and specialties. For example Augustus the Strong, who is considered the ‘inventor’ of porcelain in Europe, also had technically groundbreaking giant animals made of porcelain in Meissen.

Figurines also made their way to the homes of ordinary people as charming decoration, but their meaning has faded. Nowadays our topics and discussions are different.

How to attract a Fridays for Future generation or discount focussed society to ceramic figurines in the 21st century?

In the summer semester of 2022 product design students of the University of the Arts in Berlin explored the many faces of ceramic: 3D printing of clay, casting, or sculpting and historical, cultural, social aspects in design, such as: functionality of objects, craft versus machine, high and low culture (kitsch), history and storytelling, meaning and zeitgeist.

The project has been launched as a DESIGN CAMPUS LAB in collaboration with the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Some of the results are here on show in dialogue with the collection.

FIGUREN!
