4 UdK projects on show in Re:start at Moderne Galerie Saarbrücken

17 May till 26 October The Modern Gallery in Saarbrücken shows: Re:start, an exhibition with works of various students and graduates of UdK Product design.

What role can the museum play in the context of social transformation? What active contributions can the art world and museums make to climate protection and sustainability? The Modern Gallery of the Saarland Museum is asking these questions as part of the exhibition „Re:start. Creative positions for better futures“.

The guest project “Re:start”, curated by Mark Braun, professor of product design and designer, uses works by young designers to show how current challenges of climate change can be met. The focus is on new perspectives on the use of energy and resources, strategic changes in the areas of mobility, inclusion and consumption as well as experimental, nature-based materials and circular processes. Future-oriented scenarios for recyclable materials, products, architecture and urban space will be developed. At the same time, the focus is on resilience – how we can adapt to future living conditions and actively counteract them. The designers show how social transformation and empowerment can contribute to sustainable developments.

UdK works on show:
– MAE modern restoration, by Cathy Wolters (MA)
– Bestek and Stigma, by Hendrik Lucka (BA)
– ReTurn, by Lale Knapp and Nele Oetjens
– Papilio, by Tobias Trübenbacher (BA)

27 MARCH: LOVED ONES pops up at Museum der Dinge

Results from the Wintersemester project ‚Loved Ones‘ will be on show for a day in the Museum der Dinge.
‚Loves Ones- objects to keep‘ took place under supervision of Guestprofessor Mathias Hahn and Jonna Hille.
It will be open for the public on 27th March 12:00 – 21:00 with an evening event  starting at 18:00h. The students will give short presentations.

Backgrounds on Loved Ones….
Longevity is a key issue when it comes to understanding design as a tool for sustainability. In a world of constant consumption, the relationship between people and objects is often short-lived. Products are quickly replaced and many things lose their purpose before they have reached their full lifespan.
– How can design extend the useful life of a product? What role does the emotional appreciation of objects play? How can we delay or avoid the consumption of new goods? Where can design solutions have a positive impact on greater sustainability?
– How can repairability, modification and maintenance be integrated into the design process to make products more durable?

In this winter semester, students of the course Design & Development of UdK Berlin examined various strategies that counteract the premature ageing of objects. These include aspects such as material durability, systemic approaches as well as emotional attachment and narrative elements.
The works on display identify alternatives to existing product solutions and showcase innovative concepts with long-term relevance and use in mind

STELLUNGNAHME ZU DEN HAUSHALTSKÜRZUNGEN | BILDUNG BRAUCHT BUDGET

– Wir protestieren! –

Aktuelle Lage

Bildung braucht Budget!

Berlin, am 23.01.2025

– We are protesting! –

Current Situation

On December 19, 2024, Berlin’s black-red Senate imposed an 8% budget cut on the city’s universities. As Berlin’s smallest university, the University of the Arts (UdK) is disproportionately and critically affected due to its limited financial reserves.

Our Academic Senate has warned that this policy will result in “a significant decline in the quality of teaching,” a consequence that is, apparently, “to be accepted.” We refuse to do so.

Instead, we are aligning ourselves with the statement of our Academic Senate and decide to protest.

Impact on Education

It is unacceptable that students of Berlin’s universities, already severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, must now endure another blow due to the financial policies of the Berlin Senat. We, the student body of the UdK, are disappointed at a Senate that, instead of standing up, turns its back on us.

The Berlin Senate has imposed a budget on its internationally renowned institutions that does not even allow them to function „in terms of necessary operations.“ The academic fields essential to the university cannot ensure fair working conditions with the proposed budget, as teaching staff is being cut without prior notice, making it impossible to plan the academic operations effectively.

We do not tolerate an academic institution where the urgent and necessary filling of professorships has long been neglected, expiring contracts of lecturers are not renewed, student assistants are forced to reduce their working hours, and the vacant positions can only be filled under precarious conditions if to be filled at all.

We do not tolerate an academic institution where, due to a 30% cut in the faculty budget, activities such as excursions, exhibition visits, guest lectures, and even the procurement of essential materials and consumables like office supplies—as well as ongoing and planned research projects—can no longer be remotely financed.

We are deeply disappointed that student initiatives, which emerged solely through the voluntary commitment of individual students outside the curriculum, can no longer be supported and remain unrecognized.

We perceive the freedom and long-term quality of our education as being under severe threat. We will not accept an academic institution that cannot meet the conditions promised in the study regulations. We are disappointed by the disregard for student engagement.

We question the legitimacy of a policy that effectively amounts to a termination of the Higher Education Agreement for the years 2024 to 2028.

We will not accept an academic operation in buildings that are managed solely under the premise of „preservation and operational safety,“ reducing them, in the truest sense of the word, to mere façades of artistic work

Misguided Investments

As the responsible and central actors of the future, of social cohesion, and of the democratic fabric of this country, we are worth fighting for and deserve every form of support.

Yet, instead of standing up for the young citizens of this city and supporting them in this vital role, the Berlin Senate has chosen to invest €188 million in the demolition and reconstruction of the Jahn Stadium. This glaringly demonstrates its inability to fulfill its duty to uphold educational responsibility.

It is outrageous that while our university is on the brink of collapse due to the loss of just a few million euros, the Senate sees fit to squander hundreds of millions elsewhere.

The violation of Berlin’s Higher Education Agreements is a political choice, not an unavoidable financial necessity.

Protest

We, the students of the Berlin University of the Arts, are protesting to express our outrage about our university’s financial cuts and deteriorating academic system.

We work tirelessly to produce artistic and scientific knowledge, stemming from one of Germany’s and Europe’s most renowned art universities. Even the Berlin Senate proudly touts our achievements. We dedicate ourselves to this work with passion, often working late into the night. It is an integral part of our lives.

For us, protesting means pausing our work to fight for the conditions promised to us and sacrificing an activity we deeply value. With the demands of our studies and part-time jobs, we have no time left for organized protests. Therefore, we are forced to devote the time meant for our education to resisting a shortsighted, conceptless, and irresponsible political agenda.

Safeguarding Diverse, Accessible Education

Over decades, the UdK has established a unique profile, one that makes it indispensable in Berlin’s academic landscape due to its distinctive blend of artistic and scientific focus. This profile has created high demand across all its programs.

The diversity of Berlin’s universities, with their distinct areas of focus, is a cornerstone of mutual inspiration and a fertile ground for innovative and creative thinking.

The academic programs we demand cannot be secured through tuition increases, the transfer of certain programs to other Berlin universities, or by private donations.

We refuse to restore our education at the expense of widening educational inequality. Nor will we allow our university to degenerate into a private institution for the privileged few.

We demand that the Berlin Senate honor its Higher Education Agreement and provide adequate funding through a fair and democratically responsible allocation of the city’s budget. This is not just its right—it is its duty.

Call for Action

We see no political strategy—let alone vision—from the Berlin Senate to ensure that culture, education, and science, as Berlin’s key assets, are safeguarded. These cuts already harm the public good, weaken our city, and jeopardize its future.

We, therefore, call on all members of the UdK, the wider student body of Berlin’s universities, and all citizens who care about the future of this city to join us and show solidarity with all protests against the cuts to education and culture imposed by the black-red Senate.

Our dissatisfaction, criticism, and demands are directed at the Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner; Finance Senator, Stefan Evers; Science Senator, Dr. Ina Czyborra; and her State Secretary, Henry Marx—not at the bodies or institutions of our university.

On the contrary, this situation calls for unity among all members of the university—students, faculty, and staff alike—who contribute their indispensable efforts to the operation of the Berlin University of the Arts. We stand in solidarity with everyone affected by these cuts and are confident in our mutual support!

Investing in us means investing in all future generations.

Investing in us means investing in the future of our city and our democracy.

Investing in us means investing in solidarity, innovation, and the culture of a society capable of navigating an increasingly complex world with nuance.

Visual & Gestaltung: Katja Koeberlin & Gosia Warrink / Typeface: Tresor by Christoph Koeberlin

Open:
18. dez. 2024,  18 – 23 u, Vernissage

Adresse
Silent Green – Betonhalle
Gerichtstraße 35
13347 Berlin

An exhibition of artists* and scientists* from the Faculty of Design at the UdK Berlin, presenting the work they have been researching on over the last years

Ungovernable Ingredients
The exhibition sheds light on the expanded set of ingredients that have become critical to contemporary artistic practice. These include micro-organisms, feelings, conflict and animals, alongside long-familiar media such as light, video, and clay. Living beings, new languages, communities, or strange materials are invited into artistic and research processes for their ungovernable qualities and become co-creators, a source of political resistance, or the crucial pinch of salt.

With contributions by Maciej Chmara, Manja Ebert, Işıl Eğrikavuk, Annika Haas, Anita Jóri, Anna Kokalanova, Lilli Kuschel, Gosia Warrink.

Open:
18 dec. 2024,  18 – 23 h, Vernissage

New 4-year Horizon Europe research project STELEC – Sustainable Textile Electronics

The Wearable Computing group in the Institute of Experimental Fashion and Textile Design kicks off new Horizon Europe project STELEC – Sustainable Textile Electronics with partners on 7-8 November 2024.

STELEC is an interdisciplinary research project funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under the Pathfinder programmes in the responsible electronics topic seeking cutting-edge innovation with an end goal at TRL 2-3. The project is a multinational collaboration of research institutes, universities and companies across Europe. It aims at developing next generation textile-based electronics in applications from sensing, processing to AI, with a commitment to full lifecycle sustainability.

The researchers in the Wearable Computing group will lead Work package 5 Responsible e-Textile Production. It is dedicated to ensuring that STELEC e-textile technologies are applicable to industrial textile production and sustainable processes at prototyping stage and at future scale. Key to this is the integration of textile design knowledge on all levels of technical production (from material to circuit).

CONTEXT AND OVERALL OBJECTIVES

E-textiles are rapidly emerging as an important area of electronic circuits applications. The European Apparel and Textile Confederation (Euratex) expects that the EU market for e-textiles and textile wearables reaches €1.5 billion in 2025 and will be a significant factor for an important European industry sector. It is also a facilitator for many socially important applications such as personalized health, elderly care, and smart agriculture. Unfortunately, the environmental impact and sustainability of e-textiles remain very problematic.

With e-textiles, electronic circuits are entering a new application domain increasing the number of devices that need to be produced and recycled. The vision behind e-textiles as part of Internet of Things is that intelligence (electronic components) will diffuse into more and more everyday objects, eventually leading to electronics being virtually everywhere in the environment, so that we are looking at a potentially huge environmental impact. E-textiles are particularly difficult in terms of recycling and re-use. This is because in general they involve electronic components being deeply embedded in textile substrates. Before recycling/reuse the two need to be separated which is a non-trivial task that disrupts established recycling/re-use chains. Furthermore, the focus of research and development so far has been on overcoming the challenges involved in producing cost effective and robust conductive textile structures with little regard for environmental impact and sustainability.

DESIGNTRANSFER@FELDFÜNF | Masterausstellung Produktdesign | 30. September – 3. Oktober

Deadline’s Looming!

Ausstellung: 01.–03.10.: 14:00–20:00 Uhr

UdK Berlin’s 2024 Master of Product and Process Design exhibition at designtransfer in the interim space feldfünf presents explorations in design that address issues of critical innovation, sustainability and social responsibility.

Collectively, these projects explore the social and environmental impact of design, focusing on speculative futures, sustainability, and critical reflection. The exhibition highlights how design can serve as a tool for reimagining present and future realities, offering alternative perspectives and potential pathways for social and environmental change.

Alternative realities between humans, technology and the environment, post-humanist forms of eroticism, democratic diagnosis and repair of electrical appliances, an ironic intervention of power relations, artifacts resulting from hallucinations and a critical examination of the door handle in socio-material networks.

Tobias, Esmee and Anna on show in TRANSFORM! Vitra designmuseum

Three recent Productdesign graduates are on show in the current exhibition Transform! at Vitra designmuseum.

Energy is the main driving force of our society; energy is political, energy is invisible, energy is omnipresent. All of the buildings, infrastructure and products related to the generation, distribution and utilization of energy are created by human beings. Consequently, design plays a key role in the current transition to renewable energy. The exhibition »Transform! Designing the Future of Energy« shines a light on the transformation of the energy sector from the perspective of design: from everyday products that use renewable energy to the design of solar houses and wind power stations; from smart mobility systems to futuristic visions of self-sufficient cities. What are the criteria for designing an energy-efficient product? How can design contribute to an increase in the use of renewable energy sources? How can industry, government policies and every one of us help to achieve the transition to a sustainable future?

The exhibition features Tobias Trübenbacher’s award-winning graduation project from 2021: Papilio, a wind-powered street lamp that also addresses the theme of light pollution.
On show is also PLUS MINUS 25°C, a semester project by Esmee Willemsen and Anna Koppmann in the Semesterprojekt  Past Present, conservation for innovation

2 May: Online artist talk – Jordan Cunliffe

Open online artist talk
As part of the seminar ’stitch data‘

Jordan Cunliffe

2 May 2024, 16:00

Jordan is an embroidery artist who specialises in data visualisation in her stitch. She takes experiences, memories and stories from her own life and encodes them into stitches to maintain anonymity. Her work has a focus on the ‘everyday’ celebrating life’s smaller, quieter moments and documenting them in her stitch archive. Her work uses large amounts of small scale hand embroidery stitches which allows for a meditative and soothing practice. Each piece requires hours upon hours of sewing which is the perfect time for reflection and relaxation.

Jordan will present her own work and that of other artists from her book “Record, Map and Capture in Textile Art: Data visualization in cloth and stitch” (2022).

Lukas Henneberger wins 2023 Bundespreis Ecodesign ‚Nachwuchs‘ !

In a cooperation project with BASF Lukas Henneberger developed ‚Wrap it Up‘, where he addressed the enormous amounts of stretch foils that are used just once and end up in waste. As an alternative to this single-use plastic used on many roll-carts which are used for refilling the supermarkets, he developed Wrap it Up a re-usable mono-material solution from ultrasonic welded TPU.

fArt

fArt//  SoSe 2023 // Design Project

If you combine the words fashion and art, it sounds like fart!

Many collaborations between designers, fashion houses, brands with artists turn out to be a FART- a bit of a letdown. They are a literal translation of an artwork, art practice onto a fashion product.

The artist is often seen as top of the creative arts, designers are frequently inspired by the work of artists, but the output is sometimes questionable. There are also a few examples which were mutually satisfying, such as Louise Bourgeois and Helmut Lang who were famous for their life long friendship and collaborations.

In the Summer semester 2023 we were working with three artists, visual artist

Jeewi Lee, Benjamin Yavuzsoy and performance artist Caroline Beach.

The three artists did present their work and after the presentations the students had the opportunity to choose one of the artists in order to delve deeper into their creative universe to understand their practice, concepts and use of material. The challenge for the students was to translate the inspiration from the artists art pieces, practice and concepts into garments which were not a literal translation of the artist work. The students had the opportunity to consult with the artist on several occasions during the semester, this dialog was aiming to insure a result that was satisfying for both parties.

U don’t Know – UdK students at DDW Eindhoven 2023

‚U DON’T KNOW‘ AT DESIGN PERRON EINDHOVEN
Dutch Design Week 21-29 OCTOBER 2023

Design Graduates of UdK Berlin present their work at Designperron in Eindhoven. Titled “U don’t Know”, seven students from different disciplines and backgrounds will showcase their visions for the future.

The exhibition features a variety of works, from objects and installations to interactive connections with nature to circulative concepts. Students address topics such as gender, the home, self-determination and future technologies.

“What awaits you at Fuutlaan 12?” “You don’t know,” said the collective, namely Janik Dietz, Cathy Wolter, Kim Kuhl, Seun Hwang, Lee Kern, Oskar Bigalke and Dominique Bertisch. “This exhibition is perhaps the most diverse of DDW23.
Come and experience how differently future scenarios can be thought of and designed when students from different backgrounds and realities of life are given the freedom to shape their personal visions.”

“We want to provoke visitors to think,” the students explain further. “We want to show them that there are many different ways to shape the future. We want to inspire them to take action themselves.”

Dare to judge, be direct, be curious, be interested but most important: be there!

The exhibition is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Re_Product Design Master Ausstellung | Opening 29. September@designtransfer

UdK’s Product Design Master’s Class of 2023 is thrilled to invite you to this year’s graduation show, „Re_“. Inspired by the eponymous English prefix, the exhibition will showcase a body of work from nine graduates who rethink, reimagine, and reconstruct the way design could intervene in complex concerns such as environment, technology, consumption, and wellness. Instead of feeding more unchecked product innovations into the market of the Anthropocene, „Re_“ proposes a more socially conscious and critical approach to design.

September, 18:00–22:00
Ausstellung: 30. September, 12:00–18:00

DE-FASHIONING EDUCATION – A critical thinking and making conference 15-16 September 2023 I Berlin I hybrid I PRELIMINARY PROGRAM OUT NOW – REGISTRATION OPEN

De-Fashioning Education – a critical thinking and making conference

Berlin // hybrid

Call for Collaborations

De-Fashioning Education is a call to action as much as contemplation. A collaborative, critical and creative re-thinking and re-making of fashion education. An exploration of different fashion learning cultures.

Education for essential de-growth calls for radically different educational models and approaches: a community of learners who aim to co-create shared and diverse futures, relationships with nature, and with one another.[1]

De-Fashioning Education explores how to bring the learning and practices of fashion into balance with nature’s limits and needs and the equality and well-being of all human beings. An education for being, not only for having.[2]

‘Is the earth’s balance, for which no-growth – or even degrowth – of material production is a necessary condition, compatible with the survival of the capitalist system?’[3] André Gorz, 1972

‘The classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in the academy […] Urging all of us to open our minds and hearts so that we can know beyond the boundaries of what is acceptable, so that we can think and rethink, so that we can create new visions…’[4] bell hooks, 1994

——————————————————————————————————————————————–

fashioning education is a collaborative research initiative to open, facilitate and formalise the debate on fashion education against the backdrop of global social transformations.

It brings together experts and creatives from different fields of fashion related education, research and practice into critical conversation and exploration of the transformative potential of fashion. behind locked doors //  WiSe 22/23 // Design Project

For the Summer-Winter semester 22/23 we changed classrooms in order to collaborate with the pupils of the JSA (Jugend Strafanstalt) Berlin. Working in an environment behind locked doors, without our phones, without internet and without the tools we normally take for granted was an exciting challenge.

Social and circumstatual issues to do with imprisonment are the subjects the students were exploring  through their projects, developing concepts which were translated into garments and accessories. In short weekly workshops we did explore the creative force and energy of the participants from each intstitution. For example a sneaker workshop as well as body and fashion related exercises.

The Circular Design Challenge features exciting innovations that prevent waste by rethinking our way of life: from what we eat and wear, to how we build, package and buy.

Lale & Nele developed their REST IN GROUNDS project in the Circular Impact course (WiSe 2022/23 – Design & Social Context).
It concerns the design and manufacture of a biodegradable urn made from coffee grounds, which has the ability of neutralising the ashes and also has a positive impact

On 3 May, the 13 most promising projects will be crowned this year’s winners.
The winners will take home an award package designed to strengthen their projects and set them up for long-term success. And they will gain access to a six-month-long development programme which has been co-created by experts from the global Impact Hub network. PRESSE

Mettmann, 10. Februar 2023

PRESS

Mettmann, February 10, 2023
Mono launches young talent development project with German Design Graduates.
With the “Mono Residency”, the owner-managed family business from Mettmann, as the official ambassador of the German Design Graduates, is launching a funding project to mark the anniversary of the Mono teapot.

Mono residency
As an ambassador for the German Design Graduates – an initiative affiliated with the German Design Council in the service of promoting young talent – Mono initiates the “Mono Residency”, which is aimed directly at young designers. For more than 125 years, the family business has been manufacturing design products for the laid table in manual work at the production site in Mettmann. In 2023, Mono invites a selection of 10 from the last four graduate classes (2018-2022) to participate in the “Mono Residency” program.

40 years mono teapot
In 1983, the company, together with the designer Tassilo von Grolman, launched the first Mono teapot. It was to become a design icon in the decades that followed. The Mono Classic teapot was followed by the Mono Filio and Mono Ellipse models, which can also be found in many living rooms of tea and design lovers around the world. This 40th anniversary is both the occasion and the theme of the first edition of the “Mono Residency”.

New Perspectives
Mono invites the residency participants to play, intervene, deconstruct and recontextualize. By examining the materials of the Mono teapots and their iconic appearance, the designers develop new perspectives on the classic. The result of the project is ten creative individual pieces – ten art and design objects which take up the materiality and typology of the Mono teapot and which are characterized by their originality
as well as strong aesthetics stand for themselves.

The ten young designers
• Studio Bnag (Oliver Selim-Boualam & Lukas Marstaller) – State University of Design Karlsruhe `20/`21
• Matthias Gschwendtner – Berlin University of the Arts `21/`22
• Justus Hilfenhaus – Bauhaus University Weimar `20/`21

The students of the New Media Class at UdK Berlin are engaged with the creation and critical reflection of new technologies of communicating, feeling and sensing the unknown present and future. The exhibition at designtransfer is composed of projects – objects, installations, performances – developed during the global turbulence of the past two years, whose essence shed light into the ethos of our shared sense of time.

Werner Aisslinger (1964) graduated from UdK in 1991. Since then he dived into themes that are at the forefront of the design discourse; he worked with the latest technologies (Soft Cell, Juli Chair), new interior typologies (a.o. 25 Hours hotel/Bikini Berlin) and explored sustainable alternatives for furniture (Chair Farm, Hemp Chair). Very early in his career he looked at tiny living (Loft Cube) and with the exhibition House of Wonders he looked at potential future ways of living. Since 2012 he has been a judge in the German Bundespreis Ecodesign. Werner will present some case studies, talk about the role circularity plays in his praxis, and share some experiences being a judge in the Bundespreis Ecodesign.

Julian Lechner is a Berlin based designer who studied in Bolzano. He aims to give renewable resources – that would have ended up in the trash – a second life by transforming them into everyday objects and infusing them with a new purpose. He set up the company Kaffeeform with  a unique formula at core to upcycle old coffee into new design products. The first coffee cup prototype was made in 2009, but was developed further and improved over and over again. Julian will take us through this process and explain about the design decisions he had to make along the way, to make the concept work in the market.

Interwoven Sound Spaces – Werkstattkonzert

German Design Council announced 5 finalists Newcomer Award 2023 (4x UdK!)

German Design Award 2023: Five newcomer finalists selected. Four of them are graduates from UdK Design!
Product Design: Anna Koppmann, Tim Schütze and Tobias Trübenbacher, Fashion: Paula Keilholz.

Frankfurt, October 31, 2022
The jury of the German Design Award 2023 has selected the finalists for the »Newcomer« award.

The five up-and-coming designers from German design schools, Katharina Düing, Paula Keilholz, Anna Koppmann, Tim Schütze and Tobias Trübenbacher, impressed with their excellent portfolios. With their work, they show in particular a keen eye on social and ecological challenges – contemporary, relevant and with intelligent solutions. The award thus proves the importance of young design for the competitiveness and future viability of medium-sized companies and the German economy.

Design can provide answers to pressing questions of our time – this year, social issues and a strong ecological awareness are reflected in the portfolios of the finalists. What they all have in common is the focus on developing new solutions for ecological, social and global challenges and improving social interaction. What is exciting about the portfolios of the five selected young designers from different disciplines such as product, industrial, communication and fashion design is the diversity of perspectives and their respective implementation in practice.

The five finalists convinced the jury with their contemporary and progressive designs, which focus on topics such as gender justice, the energy and climate crisis or civil courage. The nominees were presented on October 12, 2022 in Berlin in the Soho House on the occasion of the Design Gala of the German Design Council. You get the chance to win the German Design Award, which is worth 15,000 euros.

German Design Award 2023: Fünf Newcomer Finalist*innen ausgewählt. Vier davon sind Absolventen der UdK Design!
Produktdesign: Anna Koppmann, Tim Schütze und Tobias Trübenbacher, Mode: Paula Keilholz.

Frankfurt, 31. Oktober 2022

LOUIS BINDERNAGEL WINS GDG Circular Design Award 2022

At the recent German Design Graduates award ceremony at Schloss Pillnitz Louis Bindernagel won one of the four main awards with his graduation project „Whole Earth Project“.
He was handed over his award by the jury and books by the renown design critic Alice Rawsthorn in person.

Jury Statement:
The Circular Design Award 2022 goes to the „Whole Earth Project“ by Louis Bruno Bindernagel, a graduate of the Berlin University of the Arts. The work bears witness to the designer’s intensive examination of economic, ecological and social challenges at the same time. The project deals with the analysis, consolidation and creation of networks dedicated to the idea „Think Global, Make Local“ and follows the approach of a decentralized production system with ideas shared worldwide.
The jury was particularly impressed by the integration of several principles such as efficiency, sufficiency, resilience and consistency in one design, which are designed to be circular in as many phases of a life cycle as possible.
The jury: Prof. Daniela Bohlinger (Head of Sustainability Design BMW Group), Leif Huff (most recently Head of Design Wirelane)

Louis’ work is on show with 40 other projects in in the GDG show 2022 in schloss Pilnitz till 31 October, see

Anja Lapatsch & Annika Unger

in ihren Vorhaben, in ihrer Realität.

FIGURINES! at Kunstgewerbe museum Dresden / Pillnitz | Oct. 2022

After the excursion in May 2022 to Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden / Design Campus at Schloss Pillnitz  for the FIGURINES! project a selection of the FIGURINES! project are on show in the museum from 1-31 October.
The presentation of this Design & Social Context project coincides with the exhibition of German Design Graduates Show 2022 at Design Campus.

FIGURINES!

For centuries ceramic figurines have been on the tables of kings and queens as ‘conversation pieces’ for topics that people understood and could read at the time.

Manufacturers were often connected to the courts and developed their own themes and specialties. For example Augustus the Strong, who is considered the ‘inventor’ of porcelain in Europe, also had technically groundbreaking giant animals made of porcelain in Meissen.

Figurines also made their way to the homes of ordinary people as charming decoration, but their meaning has faded. Nowadays our topics and discussions are different.

How to attract a Fridays for Future generation or discount focussed society to ceramic figurines in the 21st century?

In the summer semester of 2022 product design students of the University of the Arts in Berlin explored the many faces of ceramic: 3D printing of clay, casting, or sculpting and historical, cultural, social aspects in design, such as: functionality of objects, craft versus machine, high and low culture (kitsch), history and storytelling, meaning and zeitgeist.

The project has been launched as a DESIGN CAMPUS LAB in collaboration with the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Some of the results are here on show in dialogue with the collection.

FIGUREN!
